Healthy Hoops Scores Another Award; Wins 2005 Innovation in Health Care Award for Excellence

Philadelphia, PA - Healthy Hoops, Keystone Mercy’s asthma education and management program, was the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Health Academy’s 2005 Innovation Award for Excellence in Community Relations.

Developed in 2003 by Keystone Mercy Health Plan and the Healthy Hoops Coalition (a partnership with a pharmaceutical company, asthma educators, health organizations, community organizations and local basketball coaches) Healthy Hoops uses basketball as a platform to educate children with asthma and their parents about how to manage the disease through appropriate medication usage, proper nutrition, monitored exercise and recreational activities.

The program’s results have been extremely positive. Results from children who started the program in 2003 and have participated for two years shows that after the 2004 Healthy Hoops program a 26% decrease in emergency room visits after the second year; a 10% increase in children using preventative medication therapies; a 13% decrease in rescue medication use.

Due to the positive results in both health outcomes and participation rates in its first year, Healthy Hoops expanded to North Philadelphia in 2004 and to Chester, PA and Richland and Lexington counties in South Carolina in 2005.

Healthy Hoops has also been recognized by Philadelphia Chapter of PRSA for Special Public Relations Program and by The Communicator Awards for Design for a Special Event.
